A classmate's Televerket modem
Rickard, 15, watches the only PC owner in his class dial up a BBS. It is the communication, not the computer, that sticks.
In fact, it was the limitations of the technology that fascinated me.
- The modem came from Televerket, the state telecom; you paid per minute (local, regional, national or international calls).
- Arvika 2024: ”my dear mother found out a few times”, meaning the phone bill.
- He came in through music: keyboards and synths demanded computer technology (Arvika 2024).
- Phone bills to American BBSes could break the family budget. Once the bill came to SEK 11,000. His mother would sometimes lift the receiver to hear if the modem was screaming (Framtidslöftet).
