P3 Tech throws a nostalgia party for LunarStorm
“Get out the modem and into the krypin.” Eleven days after the 30th anniversary, P3 Tech, the tech show on Sveriges Radio P3, the national youth channel, devotes a whole episode to LunarStorm. Tech reporter Evelina Galli and journalist Fanny Wijk talk about krypins, Bjarne, nicks and fans of the Swedish band Kent, and what today's social media could learn from the early internet.
- Fanny Wijk was called Fanny Bunny 89 on LunarStorm. She gets a warm feeling when she reads words like krypin and Bjarne.
- On LunarStorm, Fanny found other Kent fans from all over Sweden. She is still in touch with them, and the first time she went to visit, her mum had to call their mums.
- The programme states that 80 percent of everyone aged 12 to 24 had a LunarStorm account in the early 2000s.
- Evelina Galli points out that LunarStorm was early with advertising funding, and that you found your own way to what you wanted to see, in chronological or alphabetical order. Today algorithms curate the feed based on what they think you like.
- According to Fanny, a very innocent era of the internet died when Facebook arrived, a time when you could stay completely private in your small community.
- Fanny believes a forum like that could be recreated for young people today, and that they would love it. She wrote loads of diary entries on LunarStorm herself, saved on a hard drive at home, but she would rather take them to her grave than read them aloud on the radio.
