The servers move to Stockholm
Over one weekend in September, the entire server park moves from KSg Systems’ data hall in Gothenburg to Stockholm. Sunday afternoon: “Full speed.”
Five years earlier the whole site stood in a wardrobe in Varberg. Now we moved an entire server hall in a weekend. And it still wasn’t enough.
- While the site was down, a temporary LunarCrew page asked members to draw postcards. About 390 came in within a few days.
- Leon, Jay, Kenny, Fredrik and brother emptied the hall in Gothenburg; Andreas and Jonny “racked and cabled” in Stockholm (hosting provider Genuity/Integra).
- CEO Kjell Sallén: it was like “changing the engine on an F1 car during a 20 second pit stop”.
- FAQ: the traffic “burned out” the suppliers’ kit.
- At its peak: about 100 servers + SAN, over 500 database queries a second; running costs SEK 70 million a year (FAQ).
