The nicknames, the random generator and the status points
Was your nickname taken? The random generator came up with one. And everything you did earned status points, which nobody wanted to lose.
You simply got a bit of status. But you absolutely didn't want to lose it. So you got a kind of social control that kept people a bit in check.
- Status points were handed out automatically for activity: Diskus, guestbook, photo. They couldn't be exchanged for anything.
- The random generator: the blogger Blondinbella wanted to be called Godisbella (taken) and got her name by chance (Rickard on P4, Swedish public radio's local channel, 2016).
- The nickname plus gender and age (P16, F17: boy 16, girl 17) became your identity. Many still use their Lunar name today.
- Rickard 2016: Blondinbella wanted to be called Godisbella, but the name was taken, so the random generator suggested Blondinbella.
